The Upsessions nació en 2005 cuando el trombonista holandés Giel Mulder tuvo la idea de formar una banda de early reggae. No para copiar el sonido reggae de los 60, sino para tomarlo como punto de partida para construir su propio estilo. Junto con el cantante y compositor Boss van Trigt, miembro original de Rude Rich and the Highnotes, seleccionó los músicos apropiados para formar lo que hoy en día es la banda.
